REMEMBRANCE POEMS
ontemporary poems for Remembrance Day and peace events. Many of the poems have appeared on the 'warpoetry' website where they have proved immensely popular. The poems have been selected and are introduced by David Roberts. Judging by the thousands of people who visit the Remembrance page of the war poetry website there is a great demand for poetry suitable for remembrance and peace occasions. This anthology goes beyond the poetry available on the website and should go a long way towards meeting the interests and needs of those concerned with Remembrance of those who have died or suffered in war both as combatants and civilians.

OUT IN THE DARK
This anthology, based on "Minds at War" - by same author - has been prepared for the general reader who requires less background information, and for students, including GCSE and A Level. One of mankind's greatest tragedies was the First World War. For over four years whole nations unleashed the full might of their new-found destructive powers. Poets played their part in this war as promoters of it, soldiers, victims and onlookers. Their stories and their responses to their experiences are deeply moving, and their work includes some of the greatest poetry of the 20th Century. Many of the poems in Out in the Dark are currently selected by exam boards. The 19th Century poems, examples of the culture of Empire and militarism, help to explain both the rush to war and the nature of the early poetry of the First World War - 140 poems in all.

COCKERELS AND VULTURES
While fighting on the Western Front in 1917 this artillery officer's volume of war poetry, Les Coqs et les Vautours (Cockerels and Vultures), had just been published in Paris. It was singled out for praise by the Académie Française in 1918 before falling, unaccountably, into obscurity. For almost 90 years this outstanding French poet of the First World War was unknown in his own country. The chance finding of a slim and musty little volume of his poetry at a jumble sale in France in 2008 was a revelation to the finder and Granier was republished and astonished French readers. Though he is stylistically very different, some compare Granier with Guillaume Apollinaire. He also stands comparison with the best of British war poets. Now English-speaking readers can encounter this remarkable talent through Ian Higgins impressive translation.

GREAT MILITARY BLUNDERS
This beautifully pakaged book features a selection of the greatest military blunders throughout history. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and when we look back at some of the world's most damaging military blunders it seems unbelievable that rational men could have made such crass decisions and fatal errors. This publication contains the answers as it looks at what lay behind the disasters at Balaclava, Agincourt, Antietam, the Philippines, and many more. Shocking and incredible, in many cases the blunders might seem almost laughable were it not for the terrible suffering and loss that they created.

BAYONETS
Bayonets: An Illustrated History uses current colour photography, with over 500 photographs, in a landscape-format, to examine Bayonets from the 17th century to date. First there is a short, general introduction that examines the history of the bayonet - named after the French town of Bayonne, where it is thought to have been devised around about 1650. The introduction examines the way that weapon development and technological advances during the period led to changes in the size, shape, manufacture and style of bayonet. This section is illustrated by images from contemporary sources. Next, there are sections on the various types of bayonet - including Plug, Socket, Sword, Yataghan, Knife, etc. - covering the most important bayonets of each type with photos and text. Lesser examples (Trowel, Pistol, Cutlass, Ramrod, Practice) are covered in shorter sections, giving an overall total of some 300 bayonets and 500 photographs. Finally, a short reference section points the reader to other reading, museum collections and websites of interest. It is, without doubt, the biggest such colour book on the market and provides a splendid reference.

INFANTRY WEAPONS
There have been many books on World War II infantry weapons so what's different about this one? Quite simply, the photography. Infantry Weapons of World War II contains some 500 totally original, all-colour, specially commissioned photographs showing major infantry weapons from the Colt M1911A1 to the MG42. The Cobberton collection in North Devon, England provides a remarkable basis for this detailed examination of small arms - the term small arms being used loosely to include not only revolvers, pistols, rifles, and submachine guns, but also machine guns, mortars, grenades, mines, and hand-held antitank weapons. With over 150 weapons in the collection the small arms of the five main protagonists - Germany, Japan, Russia, the United States, and Great Britain - are shown, with a sprinkling of those from other nations - France, Czechoslovakia, and Poland. There is no doubt that Infantry Weapons of World War II provides a splendid reference that will grace any collection.

ENDURING SPIRIT
In 1783, Henry Cabell and Susannah Holmes found themselves desperately afraid in the fortress that was Norwich Castle. They had been imprisoned for stealing goods worth more than forty shillings, a crime that automatically drew sentences of death by hanging. There they fell in love and enjoyed a potent fusion of pain and pleasure within the prison's grim walls. This story follows the true events leading to two young country folk struggling to survive the perils and squalor of a Georgian prison, where first offenders lay beside hardened criminals, muggers and murderers were mixed with children, harlots and petty criminals. When Susannah and her baby were sent to the hulks for transportation on the first fleet to Australia, Henry was desperate but powerless to join her. John Simpson, the humane turnkey, stepped in when the Captain of the hulk refused to take Susannah's baby, who, having been born in prison, had no papers. His actions sparked off an amazing chain of events which culminated in the two young people being reunited on the hulk prior to joining the very first fleet to the New World. Henry, tough and resourceful in Australia, was the first convict in history to successfully sue the authorities, run a mail service, own a ship and become the Colony's first Chief Constable. He went on to make a fortune in sealing and whaling.

SPITFIRE
This book is the result of the authors collaboration with shipping magnate, Peter Livanos, a collector of classic aircraft. It is centred on Livanos' Spitfire, the famous AR213, the only airworthy MkI in the world, and its resotration. This heavily illustrated publication presents the Spitfire in an attractive, beautifully photographed and colourful format. Like the restoration itself, nothing has been spared in producing an unusually handsome book to celebrate all aspects of the Spitfire legend and the Livanos example of it.

LEGEND
Like the Spitfire, and a relatively small number of other classic aircraft, the DC-3/C-47 Dakota is a breed apart, distinguished not only by her exceptional design, engineering, durability, performance, and her many other fine characteristics, but by her enormous base of admirers. To the millions of her passengers, and the enthusiastic captains and crews who have operated these planes for more than 70 years, and those whose lives have been affected by her in the most dramatic ways, she is unforgettable. Without question, the great Douglas Plane changes history, opening the era of modern air travel in the 1930's and as the backbone of allied air transport in the Second World War. In this new book, 'Legend', the fascinating wartime and post-war history of a significant surviving veteran of that war, the C-47A N1844A is traced, along with the pre-war, wartime and post-war story of the fabulous DC-3/C-47 Dakota type. 'Legend' is a powerful, impressive celebration of one of the most important machines of all time. In his book Crusade in Europe, General Dwight Eisenhower wrote: 'Most senior officers regard as the most vital to our success...the bulldozer, the jeep, the two and a half ton truck, and the C-47'. None of these had been designed for their combat role.
