For someone who has already plumbed the biographical details of Jane Austen, this book offers a refreshing new aspect. Tracing back along the maternal line, Victoria Huxley reveals the rich and interesting history of the Leigh family.

With the same delight one reads about Elizabeth Bennet being taken out of her relatively humble home situation for a tour of Derbyshire and being invited into Mr Darcy’s circle at Pemberley, one follows with elevated spirits Jane Austen’s visits to Adlestrop and Stoneleigh. Other biographers merely record these visits took place. This book has taken this little bit of Austen history so often passed by, opened it up and brought it vividly to life.

The influences of such visits have clearly contributed to many of the scenes, places, houses and landscapes Jane describes in her novels. Page after page there is a delicious sense of familiarity as one walks the same pathways Jane Austen must have trod. Victoria Huxley writes in a very readable and warm style, yet her research and the inferences she makes resonate with scholarly truth and integrity.

The work is a valuable addition to any collection of Austen biography. It has redressed an imbalance in my understanding of just how well connected Jane was, and of her intimate knowledge and experience of the higher echelons of society and wealth. It has also deepened my understanding of the values, issues and attitudes of the time.

As well as enjoying this book in its own right, it also promises to enhance my pleasure in re-reading Jane Austen’s novels. When I do, it will be with a fresh eye and deeper understanding, together with a more whole view of that great author’s life.

Now in its 26th year of operation, Vine House Distribution Ltd was set up in 1987 by Richard Squibb, based on 20 years’ previous experience in the sales, promotion, distribution and accounting functions of the book trade.

The basic objective of Vine House is to provide a personal, promotion-minded and cost-effective sales and distribution service for small and medium-sized Publishers, from both the UK and overseas, in a pro-active manner which keeps pace with the many on-going developments in the book trade.

Good representation remains the key to selling books into book trade outlets and this is achieved by our experienced and motivated sales team who have strong contacts at head office and retail level, throughout the UK, Europe and overseas.

We continuously disseminate information on new and existing titles by means of regular and targeted mailings to key and trade customers and specialist outlets throughout the world.

Our Worldwide Distribution service has access to approximately 45,000 trade accounts in over 200 countries. This global customer base is enhanced by specialist and non-traditional outlets and is consistently updated by a dedicated research and marketing team.

Efficiency is achieved by utilising modern and fully equipped warehousing and despatch facilities. This function includes a core publishing industry computer system which provides order management, invoicing and sales, stock and dues reporting and customer account management. Accounting activities include strict adherence to efficient cash collection procedures and tight credit control, in accordance with normal trade terms. A comprehensive package of management reports is available, as well as e-commerce facilities (including EDI and Pubeasy).

All Publishers are different, even if basic activities are common, and Vine House endeavours to personalise its services through a sound knowledge of each Client’s particular requirements. In order to achieve this, we communicate regularly with our Publishers, especially in respect of sales, forthcoming titles and promotional opportunities. This is done through our Customer and Client Services team.

Our underlying aim, therefore, is to provide our Publishers with a flexible service to suit their needs but to hold them together as a cohesive unit so that customers receive a comprehensive and responsive service.

We have been members of the Independent Publishers Guild for over 20 years.

Finally, the basis for our charges is a percentage of turnover, which we believe carries the right emphasis and also simplifies the Client’s budgeting exercise.
